Laser hair removal targets the pigment in the hair follicle with light energy, heating and disabling it to progressively reduce regrowth. Because hair grows in cycles, a course of sessions is needed to catch each follicle in its active growth phase, leading to long-term smoothness. At SŌMA we use an advanced Korean three-wavelength diode laser, which reaches follicles at different depths.

Most people need a course of 6-8 sessions spaced a few weeks apart for optimal, lasting reduction, as only hair in its active growth phase responds each time. The exact number depends on the area, hair colour and skin type. Occasional maintenance sessions may be recommended afterwards.

Modern laser technology can treat a wide range of skin tones, but the settings must be matched carefully to your skin and hair type — this is where medical supervision matters. At SŌMA we use an advanced Korean three-wavelength diode laser, suitable for most skin tones including darker skin, and treatments are supervised to keep them safe and effective for you, and we'll assess your suitability at consultation.

For hair removal, yes. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is not a true laser: it flashes a broad spectrum of light (roughly 500–1200 nm), so much of the energy heats the surrounding skin instead of the hair follicle. A diode laser emits concentrated light at precise wavelengths that the melanin in the hair follicle absorbs strongly, so more energy reaches the root with less heat on the skin. That generally means more effective sessions, more comfort and a lower risk of burns, especially on tanned or darker skin.

Our advanced Korean diode laser combines three wavelengths in one handpiece, each working at a different depth:
• 755 nm — the most strongly absorbed by melanin, so it is the most effective on fine, thin and lighter-coloured hair close to the surface, such as the upper lip, face and arms, on fair to light skin.
• 808 nm — the gold-standard diode wavelength, reaching mid-depth follicles with a balance of absorption and penetration, suiting most hair and skin types and most body areas.
• 1064 nm — penetrates deepest and is absorbed least by the pigment in the skin's surface, making it the safest choice for darker and tanned skin, and effective on deep, coarse hair such as the bikini, underarms, back and beard area.

Combining all three in a single pass treats follicles at different depths and hair of different thicknesses, with built-in sapphire, water and air cooling for comfort. As with any laser or IPL, very blonde, red, grey or white hair responds poorly because it lacks pigment; we assess your hair and skin at consultation.

Most people describe it as a quick snapping or warm sensation rather than true pain, and our three-wavelength diode laser has built-in contact cooling for comfort. Sensitive areas may feel more, but treatments are fast and well-tolerated. Any discomfort is brief.

You can start a course, but freshly lasered skin is sun-sensitive and Bali's sun is strong, so diligent SPF and avoiding direct sun on treated areas is important. Because a full result needs several sessions over months, many visitors start here and continue at home, or focus on maintenance. We'll advise what makes sense for your trip.

Laser gives long-term hair reduction rather than a guaranteed permanent result — most people achieve a significant, lasting reduction, with occasional maintenance sessions to catch any regrowth. Hormonal changes can stimulate new hair over time. Your provider will explain realistic expectations for the area you want treated.
